Last evening, the Southeast Virginia Community Foundation co-hosted the annual Today's Scholars & Tomorrow's Leaders Scholarship Reception with the Beazley Foundation. The event was held at the Bide-A-Wee golf course in Portsmouth, where dozens of high school graduates from Hampton Roads were recognized for their accomplishments. Recipients, families, donors, and board members gathered in the course's pavilion, escaping the sprinkling, summer rain. Inside, many round tables were spread out across the room, each one adorned in navy blue linens and marked with a blue hydrangea centerpiece. The first half of the...

My nephew Peter is now a Marine. Ten years ago on Sept. 11, 2001, he was only in the fourth grade. I still see him as the ring bearer at my wedding or the skinny kid who could eat two stacks of blueberry pancakes at Mom-Mom's house. Peter was on leave this summer over the July 4th holiday. He wore his dress blues to church at Fort Story and looked so proud and strong. He is now training in electronics before he goes to Afghanistan, Iraq or wherever duty calls....
