Apply for a Grant

Before applying, please confirm your eligibility by answering the following statements.

  1. Our organization is classified as a charitable non-profit under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code, or as part of a governmental body (such as a school or parks department).
  2. Our nonprofit organization provides programming to families/children/individuals in Chesapeake and/or Portsmouth, Virginia.  (What does this mean?  Under these community grant programs, SEVACF issues grants exclusively to nonprofit organizations that provide programming to Chesapeake and/or Portsmouth residents.)  
  3. The grant proposal that does not fall into one of the following categories: debt reduction, general/administrative expenses, travel expenses for individuals or groups, political organization or activity, annual appeals or membership contributions, or capital and endowment building, unless matching funds are generated within the particular organization.

If you answered “No” to any of the guidelines above, your organization may not be eligible to apply. Please call us at 757-397-5424 to schedule a time to speak to or meet with a Foundation staff member before applying.

If you answered “Yes” to all of the guidelines above, your nonprofit organization can apply for grants. Here’s how:

  1. Complete the online application form below.
  2. Optional: Submit a 2 – 3 minute video presentation highlighting points you wish to express. Be sure to include your grant request title and the amount. We will share your video with the Committee. Submission is separate and should be emailed to grants@sevacf.org.

Preferred Format:

  1. A. Background of the Organization
    1. 1. A brief description of your organization's history and mission
    2. 2. The needs, problems, or opportunities your organization addresses
    3. 3. Current programs, including their accomplishments and lessons learned. What problems did the organization overcome to be successful?
  2. B. The Funding Request
    1. 1. State the amount you are requesting
    2. 2. Describe the purpose of your request
    3. 3. The population served by this program. Must be Chesapeake and/or Portsmouth. If applicable, provide the population the organization serves in total.
  3. C. Financial Plan
    1. 1. State when funding is needed
    2. 2. State your sustainability plan for securing funding after the grant period has ended and into the future
    3. 3. If you do not receive full funding at the time of your grant request, how will it impact your program?
  4. D. Evaluation:What is your evaluation plan?
